Fix Your Alignment Issues With These Tips
Brad Ott, PGA
Brad Ott: Hi this is Brad Ott, Director of Instruction here at TPC Craig Ranch.
I work with a lot of amateur golfers.
I work with some higher level golfers, but one of the most common things that I see my amateur golfers struggle with is alignment.
Here's what I mean.
Whenever we have alignment sticks out, it gets a little bit more predictable.
You're able to actually set up a grid for your path, your clubface, and your body to get a little bit square.
When it comes to being on the golf course, you don't have any help.
There's no one out there to line you up.
You're going to have to learn to do it by yourself.
Here's one technique that I've actually taught a lot of my students that helps them overcome some of these alignment obstacles.
It's called a secondary target.
What I have here is I have a golf ball.
We're going to pretend that we're on the golf course so we have our golf ball here on the fairway.
We're going to pretend we hit it to one of the fairways out there and right here in front, I've set this up.
You can't do it obviously when you play, but I've set up a secondary target.
One thing you can use, you could use some sand.
Sometimes there's a divot in front of you, but for visual purposes I want to have it real easy to see.
I've got a couple sticks out there that are in front. What you're going to do with the secondary target is you're going to use those sticks to help you line up to the actual target itself.
The further you get away from your target, the harder it is to see.
By having a secondary target, something in close, it becomes a little bit easier to line up.
What I mean by that is, if I were to set in with my clubface and point it at these sticks, the odds of me being able to do that's pretty good.
When I try and set up this clubface and line up at something out there that's 100 to 200 yards away, the odds of me lining up that start to decrease.
It becomes more difficult the further out.
By using your secondary target, it allows you to get your clubface square.
Whenever you get your clubface square, you got to get your body square.
Here's how we go about doing it.
You'll get behind the golf ball.
You'll set into your secondary target with your clubface, so make sure your clubface is square to that secondary target.
After you do that, you really want to make your body square to your clubface.
What do I mean by that? There's a scoring line on the bottom of the club.
It's the very bottom groove.
Make that line perpendicular to your chest.
Imagine your chest being a letter T and this being in the front line of the T, so you're actually going to put the line of the clubface and T it up with your chest.
By that time if you can get that square, you'll find that you're square to the target.
It's critical that you have a secondary target, you're able to line up your clubface to, something in close.
Good rule of thumb, try not to go more than about 10 feet out.
Keep it in here pretty close.
Once you line your clubface up, then make the line of the club, that scoring line we talked about, make it perpendicular to your chest.
At that point in time, you should be very well lined up to your target out there that's further out.
You don't have to, once you get to this point, you don't have to look at your secondary target anymore.
You can now look at your actual target and at that point in time, you're good to go.
Once you start to get that secondary target, I think you're going to find your alignment starts to improve and you'll start hitting more fairways and greens.
