How to Properly Release the Putter
CJ: Hey, CJ [Dex 00:00:01] from Short Game Secrets.
I want to talk a little bit about technique.
What should the putter do in your stroke? Some people believe that the putter should go straight back and straight through, have no arc whatsoever.
I'm not that philosophy.
I don't believe that.
I think because of the way we're standing, we're standing to the side, we're not literally hovering over this, our arms are connected to our body, our putter has to come slightly to the inside.
You can imagine what my hands are going to do.
They're going to rotate.
If I just keep my hands, and you can do this at home with me.
Touch the top part of your knees.
That's our perfect posture.
Take your hands and push the palms together this way.
That's going to get you to squeeze your arms in, and you're going to feel this connection right here in your armpits.
If you do that, that's really the connection, your arms will stay connected, the putter will swing from in to out.
I understand a lot of people what they have a tendency to do is when they hit this put, they start trying to guide it, and then the heel of the putter actually leaves the putter face.
What we want to get to do is we went to get the toe to release.
A great drill for this is right hand only, and all we're going to do is just get in here, put our left hand behind us or in our pocket, let the toe rotate open, let the toe rotate closed.
Now, I'm doing it quite a bit.
Notice I'm not doing it with wrists.
I'm just allowing the face to rotate.
I'm taking my right hand, letting the door swing open, and swing close.
This is, again, right hand only is a great drill to teach you how to release the putter.
When you learn to release the putter, I think your rhythm becomes better, I think you start rolling the ball the proper distance, I think you start holing more puts.
So, use right hand only to learn to release the putter face and hole more puts.
