Learn to Feel the Transition with the Step Drill
Bobby Wilson here, founder of the Power Golf Institute and four time Re/Max World Long Drive Champion.
Now, what happens is, I have taught people about their back swings.
We talk about hitting the ball club face and all that, but so many people want to know what the gathering, the slot, the transition, what I call in maximum overdrive, I call it "putting it into gear".
I want to help you with something.
I want to teach you or give you a tip on how to feel the transition because remember, I believe the feel is real in golf.
One of them is what we're going to call the "step drill" and that is this.
I want you to set up to your golf shot.
We're going to do it with the driver.
That's what I'm going to start with.
I take my normal stance, then I'm going to go ahead and take my left foot because I'm a right-hander, put it next to my right foot.
Put the driver back in between them, and then I'm going to swing it back and feel like I step into the ball.
Then as I do that, I'm going to bring my right foot next to my left foot.
This is just some transition and some weight shifting. Let me show you again.
We're going to do this and I swing, and then I want to bring it forward one more time.
What I want to explain to you is this.
Everybody knows this drill, but to hit the ball longer and further than you ever thought possible, here's the key.
Keep your upper body behind the ball.
Don't let it drift left as your weight shifts left.
That's the key.
Again, watch this one more time.
Normal set up.
Take it back.
Most of you will step and the upper body goes with it.
Notice that I have no power and no extension to hit the ball and I'm going to end up what we call "chicken winged".
I want to make sure of this.
Again, here's the drill.
We take it back.
Look at my lower body.
My lower body is moved left, my upper body is stayed behind it.
When you get a chance to watch the Re/Max World Long Drive Championships, watch Jamie Sadlowski, two time champion of the open division.
Watch the greatest long driver ever in the history of it.
Five World Championships.
Look where their upper body is.
There lower body has moved left in the transition, or what we call "putting it into gear", and their upper body is behind it.
I'm going to go ahead and hit this shot for you doing the drill.
Here we go.
Right down the middle every single time.
Remember, golf's a lot more fun when you're out driving your buddies.
